On September 9th, 2011 Adventure Guide moved into their new 14,000 sq. ft. location which provided them with more efficient space to run their store (better parking, better access, etc). With a 25KM bicycle trail out back, and being adjacent to local neighbourhoods, the amount of visitors have increased (including foot traffic). Adventure Guide offers gear rentals and works with local schools to provide equipment for students so that they can experience the outdoors.
In 1984, University of Waterloo attendees Shane Baker and Peter McGovern had a love of the industry and started the store. Mike started in 1989 and then later bought the business with his wife in 2002. Paddle sports have always been part of their heritage, and recently footwear has been a new focus with travellers and outdoor enthusiasts coming in for every season.
Adventure Guide offers guest speakers, on-water demos, and manufacturer days to bring the outdoors to the area. Mike is also proud very proud of the building itself. He had the opportunity to sit down with the architect and go over designs that made for a very 'green' building with little touches such as proper lighting and big windows on the North side to keep the building well lit. Adventure Guide is also fully accessible for staff and patrons alike, with the washrooms, change rooms, offices, and stock rooms which is an example of the extra mile Adventure Guide goes for you.
