Canoes Stolen From Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre
The Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre, which does some incredible work patching up injured turtles from across the province (in addition to many other things), just reported that two of their canoes have been stolen…
Unfortunately when we arrived at our field site this past week we found that our trusty canoes had been stolen.
This is a major setback for our fieldwork program. Our canoes were very sturdy, reliable, aluminum canoes, fit for the rough terrain our field team needs to travel through to locate our study turtles. Each week our study turtles movements are tracked and recorded. If we are unable to keep up with the turtles movements then we may not be able to locate the turtles in the future, losing valuable data on conservation strategies for juvenile Blanding's Turtles. We are working with law enforcement to locate the stolen canoes, but there is no guarantee that they will be found.
If you have a sturdy and reliable canoe that you would be willing to donate to our field work program please contact fieldwork@ontarioturtle.ca, if you are able to donate any funds to purchase new canoes for our field work program, please help us by donating at ontarioturtle.ca/donate
