Recall: All Compasses & GPS Units Made Before January 1, 2019

The gig is up! April Fools!

I’m sure you’ve read about the migrating magnetic North Pole, more commonly referred to as “The North Pole Drift”. We are accustomed to pulling our compasses out of our pocket and using them to get a bearing, however the problem being is that the “fixed point” of the North Pole is moving about 50 KM a year and picking up speed. Scientists figure all of our handheld compasses and GPS units will be so far out of whack by this late Summer that they will be more of a hinderance than a help.

Rather than run the risk of people becoming lost and facing further turmoil, we are issuing an industry-wide recall on handheld compasses and GPS units. Simply return them to the store you purchased them from to receive an in-store credit or to purchase a newer version with a manufacturer’s date of 2019 or newer.

Larger GPS units such as those built into cars and mobile phones will be receiving a patch shortly from each manufacturer to correct for the problem. As to why now?…

This is similar to the Y2K bug in that we didn’t see this coming. While we ‘kicked the can down the road’ not expecting the drift to occur this severely in our lifetime, it is rapidly becoming a problem we can not ignore. What starts as a family canoe trip could rapidly turn into what was depicted in the movie “Deliverance”.
