Winter Anorak Kits

Dates:  January 15-17, 2021

Instructor:  Colleen Kiselyk

Partners:  Frostbite! Winter Camping Symposium

Location:  Dale and Colleen's Adventure Farm

Description:  We will be sewing our own 10 oz. cotton canvas winter anoraks from the Lure of the North kits.  You will need to purchase and bring your own kit to the class so that you can select sizing and trim details.  You must place your order BEFORE THE END OF NOVEMBER to ensure that you will have it in time.  Please go to the Lure of the North website to order.  Kits run between $115 and $225 + shipping and GST, depending on what options you select.  We will sew your anorak together this weekend.  A basic understanding of and some experience using a sewing machine is a requirement. I will provide sewing machines, a serger, work tables, basic thread and needles, as well as my experience in sewing an anorak.

Accommodations:  All participants and Instructors will be required to bring and camp in Hot Tents with Stoves.  We will be sewing in the one heated building on site and there is a single bathroom for participants to use.

Meals:  All participants will be required to bring and prepare their own meals for the weekend.

Other Required Gear:  It is recommended that participants bring along the following:  a good desk lamp for extra light, good sewing scissors, any extra material you may wish to use to modify your anorak (I put in extra fabric on the sleeve and "pit zips" - zippers in the armpits to vent it instead of having to take it off), a pair of indoor shoes, warm clothing, extra warm footwear, chairs, snacks, drinks, masks, and hand sanitizer.  If you have access to firewood, Dale and Colleen would appreciate that you bring some along, if possible, to minimize the work and preparations before the event.

COVID:  All participants need to adhere to AHS standards of safety:  not symptomatic or awaiting results of testing, have not been out of the country in the past 14 days, not have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID in the past 14 days.  You will be required to fill out a questionnaire upon arrival.  Masks required in shelters when social distancing is not possible.  All participants will be encouraged to help to keep the warming room and bathroom clean and sanitary.  (Please bring your own masks.)

Fees:  $75.00 + GST per person – includes instructor present all weekend, sewing machines,

Making Fire on the West Coast: Any time, Any season.

Fees:

$40.00

Dates/Time:

16 January 2021

Workshop Description:

The West Coast provides a unique environment for fire make that is found in the shoulder seasons in the rest of Canada. When most of our great country is frozen, which can often create "dry" conditions and it's own challenges, our coast gets months of endless rain that leave our common sources of fire sopping wet. Even in those conditions, a fire can be created without a lighter or matches.

During this workshop, we'll cover multiple methods of lighting fires no matter which season you're in. Things like where to find dry wood, what you need for a successful fire, and what strategies are most effective in the temperate rain forest ecology. We'll talk about the differences between a fire for cooking, boiling, warming and more. The science behind this all and of course, tips, tricks, and hacks that will simplify your fire skills.

All materials and tools are provided for the in person session. If you bring an item for the food bank, you'll walk away with a firesteel that you'll learn to use during the session.
