Claim Your Camping Trips On Ontario's 2022 Staycation Tax Credit

The Province of Ontario introduced a new temporary plan to help the tourism and hospitality sectors recover while also encouraging families to explore the province. The Ontario Staycation Tax Credit allows an Ontario resident to claim 20% of their eligible 2022 accommodation expenses, when filing their personal Income Tax and Benefit Return for 2022.

You can claim eligible expenses of up to $1,000 as an individual or $2,000 if you have a spouse, common-law partner or eligible children (Only one individual per family can claim the credit for the year), to get back up to $200 as an individual or $400 as a family.

The credit itself covers short-term stays that have HST applied to them so keep your receipts for tax time. Those receipts should include at least all of the following information:

  • the location of the accommodation

  • the amount that can reasonably be considered to be for the accommodation portion of a stay

  • the GST/HST paid

  • the date of the stay

  • the name of the payor

Both frontcountry and backcountry camping can be claimed under this credit, but only for the reservation itself. Any extras such as campfire wood, can not be claimed.

The credit would provide an estimated $270 million to support over one-and-a-half million families to further discover Ontario. If you have questions about the tax credit, please contact the Ontario Budget Hotline at 1-800-337-7222.

Ontario Parks HST Number

Update: You will need to supply Ontario Parks’ HST number to your accountant which wasn’t easy to find. Turns out it’s not on your receipts, but it IS on the reservation confirmation e-mail. 124668666. Hope that helps.
