This guidebook covers the 740-mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail that stretches across New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and the province of Quebec. The first edition came out in 2010, and the new edition is updated so you can plan a day trip, weekend getaway, week-long vacation, or paddle end-to-end for a month or more. “Often referred to as the "Appalachian Trail of the Waterways," the 740-mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail (NFCT) begins in the Adirondacks at its western terminus in Old Forge, New York. It then traverses 23 rivers and streams, touches 59 lakes and ponds, connects 45 communities and towns, and crosses more than 65 portages (totaling about 70 miles), before ending at its eastern terminus in Fort Kent, Maine.

On the NFCT, opportunities for paddlers are endless, and services are easy to find. You can camp in an Adirondack lean-to, paddle through the High Peaks Wilderness, watch moose from the deep woods of Maine, or run whitewater trips down the Androscoggin River in New Hampshire.
