Gear Review: MEC Slogg HD 70L Dry Pack
MEC has a line of canoe packs that are vibrant, waterproof, and rough and tumble enough for your next adventure. The Slogg series are roll-top style packs made from 840-denier PU-coated nylon which makes them waterproof, but not submersible (although as long as you’ve rolled the top properly, I’m sure they would float without issue).
The 70L dry pack that I’ve been using for almost a year has not shied away from any of the abuse I’ve put it through. Not that I’m rough with my gear, but setting it down on jagged rocks or the general scrapes of a portage have only managed to put a few blemishes on the pack. It has stood up to all sorts of abuse and I have no fear of my gear poking through, or nature causing a slit in the thick exterior.
The pack measures 86cm (length) by 40cm (width) by 30cm (depth) and doesn’t sit too high even when full. You will have no troubles slinging your canoe over your head or worry about getting caught on your pack when dismounting. It weighs 2.50kg which is a little hefty, but with that extra weight comes some cushioned straps, load lifters and a back plate which does a great job of keeping pointy things from poking into your back while on the portage.
The best feature, and why I’d recommend a pack like this is the padded hip belt. It is comfortable, easily adjustable and keeps the weight of your pack from shifting around on you.
If you’re ok with trading a little extra weight for a rock solid pack that will keep your gear safe and dry, I recommend the whole Slogg line. There are lots of different sizes and configurations and hopefully one will suit your needs.
