Trail Mix: Now Hotel Companies Are Getting In On Sleeping Outdoors
I think if you are a fan of camping and the outdoors, there’s probably a link to the fascination with cabins/tiny cabins (or at least I do). Any opportunity to build a bunkie and have it nestled within the woods is an invitation to get away for a while and explore.
Here in Ontario we have an excellent business called Cabinscape that make tiny, offgrid cabins that offer a chance to get away from it all and I highly recommend them.
Interestingly the international chain of hotels Marriott in the U.S. has recently purchased a similar tiny cabin brand called Postcard Cabins (formerly known as Getaway Outposts). Check out Trailborn as well for a little more unique/costly getaways).
Postcard Cabins has a portfolio comprised of 29 properties with over 1,200 cabins across the U.S. which will be available to book on Marriott.com and the Marriott Bonvoy mobile app at some point this year.
With hotel companies continually looking to diversify their offerings I can see this happening in Canada at some point too. This could be seen as either an encroachment into the outdoors or a gateway opportunity to introduce someone new to the outdoors that normally wouldn’t venture out that far (or has physical difficulties in getting somewhere remote).
What is your take? Have you tried a tiny cabin before? Would you be interested in booking through a hotel chain?
