Loblaws Now Sells Cricket Powder
For an easy way to add protein to your camping meals, Loblaws now sells Cricket Powder. It seems to be a popular product as two out of the three Loblaws/Superstores we went to were already out of stock during launch week.
While 80% of the world’s population already uses crickets, it’s still a little bit unknown here in Canada. By using them in baked goods or smoothies you add high levels of protein, B12, calcium and fibre to your diet. They have a subtle earthy flavour and if used in small amounts, no taste at all.
We did a "blind" taste-test by throwing in two teaspoons in our berry/leafy green smoothies that we make to see if we could tell the difference between it being in the drink, and without. And the verdict is?... yes, you can definitely tell, but it's not that bad. We'd definitely lower the amount we put in, but continue using it for that extra protein boost. Next thing to try is putting it in baked goods.
Pick up a package today at your local Loblaws, they are $2 off until March 21st and are found in the Healthy Foods section.
Planning on using them in your next camping meal? Let us know how! We think they would be a perfect addition in energy balls. 2 1/2 tbsp (19g) adds 13 grams of protein.
