Trail Mix: Derecho Damage At Warsaw Caves
Almost a year ago a massive derecho (a wind storm with straight winds) ravaged most of southern Ontario. Many random spots were hit hardest including the flattening of an entire campground at Bon Echo Provincial Park while numerous homes were damaged in the town of Uxbridge.
It was much to my surprise while hiking through the trails at Warsaw Caves (currently closed for the season but re-open Mid-May) how much damage they incurred as well. In one corner of the park as far as you can see are enormous tress uprooted, and all laid to rest facing the same direction with root balls wider than I am tall. What was once a towering forest is now a jumbled pile of pick-up-sticks. So what does this mean for the forest? New homes for critters? A chance for new saplings to stretch up to the skies? The employees have already done a great job clearing a maze-like path through the swath of trees and I look forward to watching what nature has in store.
