Trail Mix: Ode To The Wayne Boat
This 88 pound Royalex behemoth was lovingly dubbed the “Wayne Boat” as Wayne at the local outdoors store was in charge of it’s whereabouts. The 16’ Mad River Canoe “Explorer” was probably the heaviest in the fleet and everyone loved to knock it, but when I got to use it I couldn’t be happier.
There was a time I didn’t have a canoe (never mind three of them) and to just get your hands on one that you could take anywhere, or any time was what freedom was all about. Sure, I didn’t use it for it’s intended use and slugged this monstrosity across many portages (and once almost pinned myself to my car in the rain trying to get it on to my roof racks as I struggled under its weight). You can't kneel in it, but you don't have to because there is no way it will tip. Having your very own canoe makes you look past all of these faults.
It has been the star of many photos and taken on numerous camping trips, but now it comes time to part with the Wayne Boat as it heads off to a new home. Thanks for the memories!
