Temagami Backcountry: Obabika River Canoe Route

We embarked on a 4 day canoe trip to Temagami's Obabika River Provincial Park in 2011. This trip would take us down the remote and scenic Obabika River. We also visited the Obabika Old Growth Forest and hiked the Wakimika Triangle trails through the worlds largest reaming old growth red and white pine forest. This trip had a challenging drive to get there up an old logging road but it was all part of the journey.

The Last Descent - Full Length Documentary

Winner of the People's Choice Award - Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival 2009 Winner of the Activism through Adventure Award - Boulder Adventure Film Festival 2009 The World's rivers are being dammed now faster than ever. In response to this a group of whitewater paddlers set out on a one year adventure to document what could be the last descent. Nepal's Marsyangdi River, Uganda's White Nile River and India's Brahmaputra River are all in the process of being dammed or are threatened by large-scale hydroelectric projects. These rivers also happen to be home to native people living sustainably in their environment, the most ecologically diverse areas in the world, and gigantic whitewater. Hetch Hetchy reservoir in Yosemite National Park served as an inspiration as the beginning of large-scale dam construction in California 70 years ago, and now the rallying cry for dam removal and restoration in The Golden State. "I think right now developing countries can learn from the mistakes that we made and in return for us to learn from these people that have learned to live sustainably in their environment." Says Charlie Center in The Last Descent. The adventure of travel and exploration, the story of native people fighting to survive and the exhilaration of whitewater kayaking are mingled together in this award winning film. Produced by Charlie Center, Katie Scott and Scott Ligare

Waterwalker

This feature-length documentary follows naturalist Bill Mason on his journey by canoe into the Ontario wilderness. The filmmaker and artist begins on Lake Superior, then explores winding and sometimes tortuous river waters to the meadowlands of the river's source.

Along the way, Mason paints scenes that capture his attention and muses about his love of the canoe, his artwork and his own sense of the land. Mason also uses the film as a commentary on the link between God and nature and the vast array of beautiful canvases God created for him to paint. Features breathtaking visuals and exciting whitewater footage, with a musical score by Bruce Cockburn.

Hugh Stewart, Canoe Builder - Legend of Temagami, Owner of Headwaters Canoes

Hugh Stewart grew up learning to paddle canoes in Algonquin, and later in life worked as a guide and outfitter in Temagami where he learned to build and repair cedar-canvas canoes. After more than 40 years building cedar-canvas canoes, Hugh and his team at Headwaters Canoes offer stunningly beautiful canoes which remain equally functional. While filming Canoe: Icon of the North we interviewed Hugh. Unfortunately, due to the number of interviews and restraints from the length of the film, only a small part of the interview could be used in Canoe: Icon of the North.

For fans of Canoe: Icon of the North, Trailguide Pictures is happy to release the full Hugh Stewart interview, recorded in 2015 while filming Canoe: Icon of the North. Canoe: Icon of the North (first released in 2015) is a short film that will inspire viewers through the stories told by the legends of Canada's paddling community and explores the idea of the canoe as part of Canadian culture. Starring Kevin Callan, Becky Mason, Ted Moores, Hugh Stewart, Adam VanKoeverden, Mark Oldershaw, John Jennings and Jeremy Ward.

8 Days Alone in Temagami - Part 1. Solo Canoe Trip.

Lake Trout Supper. Insane Bugs and High Winds. During peak black fly and mosquito season, I ventured deep into the vast area of Temagami for an 8 day solo trip. Covering over 100kms, I encountered some insane weather, black flies and mosquitoes that wanted to torment me 24/7, beautiful wildlife, and excellent fishing. Through some uncertain days on this trip, I learned a great deal about myself and ultimately fell even more in love with nature and adventuring within it depths. In Part 1, I begin my trek. I venture to beautiful Wolf Lake for night 1, and then push through windy conditions to stay on Southeast Bay for night 2. I have some great shore fishing for lake trout, and prepare one for a tasty supper
