The First Seven Kilometres Of The Berg Lake Trail Re-opens On June 27th

Update: June 27th, 2023

To accommodate the trail’s growing popularity, 97 parking stalls have been added to the trailhead parking lot, including six accessible parking spaces. The expansion nearly doubles the number of parking spaces.

For the 2023 season, most of the 23-kilometre trail will remain closed for ongoing repairs. The first seven kilometres up to the Kinney Lake Campground have been repaired and are open for day hikes and overnight stays at the 18 backcountry campsites. These sites must be reserved in advance.

BC Parks has been working hard to reopen the Berg Lake Trail in Mount Robson Provincial Park since the 2021 heat dome, rapid snowmelt and excessive rain caused substantial damage to large sections of the trail. We know people care deeply about provincial parks and want them stewarded effectively. That’s why we’re focused on building back in a climate-resilient, sustainable manner to ensure inspiring natural spaces, like Mount Robson Park, will be accessible for people to visit and enjoy for many years to come.
— George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy

The Berg Lake Trail (part of B.C.’s Mount Robson Park) has been closed for some time now due to flooding and significant damages to the trail.

The repair process was divided into three parts and work looks to have been completed on the first phase meaning that the first seven kilometres will open on June 27th, 2023.

There was a lot of damage. There were bridges that were completely covered in rock… and bridges that were swept away, while other bridges became these elevated pathways over dry riverbeds as the Robson River shifted dramatically. Some of the campsites were flooded, facilities were damaged and sections along the trail had bad erosion and slumping.

It is a very popular trail. It is a great first-time backcountry camping experience. We get a lot of young families even going out taking their kids for their first wilderness experience,
— Natasha Ewing, community liaison officer with B.C. Parks

The first part of the trail has been repaired and the Kinney Lake Campground will be open for day-use and overnight stays. This is the first phase of construction – we are aiming to open Kinney Lake to Whitehorn Campground in 2024 and Whitehorn Campground to Berg Lake in 2025.

The trail to Kinney Lake is suitable for all levels of outdoor adventurers. Following the vivid blue Robson River, hikers move through a temperate rainforest up to the shores of Kinney Lake with towering snowcapped mountains in all directions.

Overnight stays must be reserved prior to your visit at https://camping.bcparks.ca/ - reservations can be made up to four months in advance.
